The Comparative Study to the Alcoholism with the Alcoholic Psychosis and Social Drinkers in Korea


Abstract
In this study, It was attempted to reveal the characteristic clinical pictures of the alcoholics, the alcoholic psychotics and the nonalcoholics in their premorbid status, premorbidperson ality, family status and illness history, adjustment in their life situation, drinking pattern and period, and precipitating factors.
There were included 150 cases of the alcoholics, 30 cases of the alcoholic psychotics, and 48 cases of the social drinkers in this study.
The results were as follows:
1. They were distributed to the range of age from 25 to 49, and the mean age was 37.3. As to the mean age of each three groups, the alcoholic psychotics were 43. 5, the alcoholics as 36. 9, and the social drinkers as 34. 7.
2. As to the premorbid personality of the alcoholics and the alcoholic psychotics, the cyclothmic personality is most freqnently observed, and the passive aggressive personality or the schizoid personaltiy were also frequenlty observed. The antisocial personality was characteristically presented in the alcoholic psychotics than the alcoholics, but the obsessivecompulsive personality was presented in the latter than the former.
3. As to the precipitating factors of the alcoholics and the alcoholic psychotics, intrafamilial problems, military problems, and occupational problems were the significant factors. The marital problem was more frequently involved in the alcoholic psychotics than the alcoholics, but the school problem was more frequently involved in the latter than the former.
4. It was revealed that comparing with the social drinkers, the alcoholics and the alcoholic psychotics had the following characteristic pictures.
1) Drinking was their only interest.
2) They showed maladjustment in their sexual life.
3) Their parents maintained unstable marital status.
4) They showed maladjustment in their family life.
5) They committed more frequent legal problems.
6) They showed maladjustment in their occupational life.
5. It was revealed that comparing with the social drinkers, the alcohlic psychotics had the following characteristic pictures;
1) Their drinking period was relatively longer.
2) They tended to be an unemployed persons.
3) They had remarried or divorced in their marital status.
4) They showed maladjustment in their relationship with spouse. 5) They showed maladjustment in-their social life.
6) Generally, they were not the first child in their sibling order. 7) They had history of parent loss before puberty. .
It was concluded that the alcoholic psychotics and the alcoholics were similar patterns in the personality character and neurotic trait, and both groups tended to have maladjustment in their family life, marital & sexual life, occupational life. and social life. As a consequence, it was considered that they have been exposured to the various conflicts and burdens in their family life.
